WHSmith PLC (also known as WHS or colloquially as Smith's, and formerly W. H. Smith & Son) is a British retailer, headquartered in Swindon, Wiltshire, which operates a chain of high street, railway station, airport, port, hospital and motorway service station shops selling books, stationery, magazines, newspapers, entertainment products and confectionery.

A former employee mentioned, "Terrible pay at WHSmith I was paid £3.90 before I turned 18 and £4.15 after I turned 18. They put women behind the tills and men on the shop floor, and they just wander around doing nothing, very unfairly divided workload. Very shady, business money often went missing and they hire young people to use as scapegoats."

customer service assistant (Former Employee) says

"Terrible pay I was paid £3.90 before I turned 18 and £4.15 after I turned 18. They put women behind the tills and men on the shop floor, and they just wander around doing nothing, very unfairly divided workload. Very shady business money often went 'missing' and they hire young people to use as scapegoats.nothingawful pay, long hours of standing still with no chairs."

Sales Assistant (Part-time) says

"Not worth the minimum wage. They expect you to do management style work for minimum wage and no thank you nothing. The manager was a bully and when head office would come for a visit they'd laugh about her attitude and basically say it was OK for her to swear at us be rude to us and customers and tell us she wanted to hit us! Over worked and underpaid for sure. Oh and also under staffed to the point you had to lose holidays or come into work on your holiday week off because someone called in sick. .NoneEverything"

Warehouse Assistant (Former Employee) says

"The picking manager is a nasty bully at Swindon warehouse most unprofessional person I’ve ever worked for and a lot of people in the centre agree he is a bully Other than that it was ok Pay isn’t great People ok Nice big tea room Only one break but ok shiftsTea room. Smoking area pay same as everywherePicking manager to be taught how to manage. Ask your staff whs how they feel about this vile person"

Sales Assistant (Former Employee) says

"The work at WHSmith is easy enough and as long as you are provided with variety of jobs in the shift all is well, yet the management was very inconsistent, some being kind and colloquial, others by-the-book and very aware of any relaxations the other managers taught. Rules and treatment are very inconsistent and holidays are often only replied to very close to the date with a denial (despite adequate notice)."

Sales assistant/Cashier (Former Employee) says

"They treat people bad and pay bad to I did weeks and weeks 12 hours shift they never pay right and more like slave job had lost holidays when needed time to have a rest I had to work as no staff management treat people so bad does lock like we back on 1950s slavery"

Sales Assistant (Former Employee) says

"Awful company who don’t treat their employees with any respect at all, are more than happy to request you come in early tomorrow whilst making you feel that you have no choice but if you suddenly have an appoint that you want to make you’re made to feel bad about it, poor management never stayed until close which left all kinds of problems we couldn’t deal with and were always nit picking instead of helping you improve couldn’t wait to leave the company and thankfully found a new job, I was working at the Piccadilly station main shopNone"

Sales Assistant (Former Employee) says

"Was made to work in the shop on my own for closing shifts, there’s almost no point in them having the self service checkouts because everyone just comes to the normal till anyway."

Sales Assistant (Current Employee) says

"WHSmith staff are lovely but the post office staff lack customer service skills and are either miserable or have a can't be bothered attitude. *tip* If you get a job here stick with the bright coloured hair member of staff she's fun to work with, will brighten your day and the customers love her*"

Sales Assistant (Former Employee) says

"This was my first job ,so I did it when I was free very low paid . The mangment always shout at you go faster my advice when you coming hear for first job Don t bother.NonMangment"

Counter Clerk (Former Employee) says

"Having worked for the company for many years, I transferred to a different branch, worst decision I ever made. The management are not supportive, I have asked for help through HR in the end. Constantly changing hours and days. Surely a routine is better for everyone, so we can have a decent work/life balance. No organisation of personnel files, mine is lost apparently."

Sales Assistant (Former Employee) says

"Received barely any training, management were awful. Pay is low, verging on criminally so. To the point where they even had to issue a backdated uniform allowance pay-out to all past employees because they weren't paying it at the time. They sell out of date confectionary to customers, and food stock is stored on the floor in a dirty stockroom. You are given unattainable targets for selling add-on products, and it is mandatory to ask every single customer whether they would like to buy a chocolate bar, reglardless of how appropriate this may be for each customer. It is genuinely a sackable offence in your contract not to offer every customer about add-on products."

Sales Assistant (Former Employee) says

"To put it simply, Smiths is one of the worst companies I've ever experienced. Upper management do not care about the stores or their workers. Store managers are being underpaid and understaffed leading to stress and increased workload. Stores are having their hours cut to save money yet management do not understand that this will cause losses: customers get annoyed at the absence of staff on the shop floor, displays cannot be filled up due to lack of staff and there is a culture of disinterest in stores. Upper management needs to be completely changed as they are out of touch with what actually goes on in a store. It's a shame because there are genuinely talented staff that could be supervisors and even managers but they are taken advantage of by being told they need to 'prove themselves', even after over a year of undertaking management duties without being paid a managers salary. The very idea that the higher-ups want to encourage good mental health is a joke, when all they do is exploit their workers and make them work for peanuts. Do NOT work for this company."

Customer Assistant (Former Employee) says

"The place is so bad management is poor as they do not care about the employees whatsoever ad go ape when the higher up come in, honestly i do not recommend working here the hours are poor and always expect you to work overtime when you say you cant and the shifts are very long and annoying. They do not teach you well and grabbing things like stock was a real pain, if you ask any employee there they'll say they hate the job but dont have many options. The airport is a very very busy environment and over time can really get to you as the amount of customers that come through is crazy and they expect you to work for the lowest minimum wage, i heavily plead with you to not take up this job as it is so bad and you will hate things like the language barrier and the customers can be rude quite a lot, so look for something else do not take this job it is not worth it. I could not work here longer than 6 months it was too much."

Sales Assistant (Former Employee) says

"Worst company you could ever work for! Management are liars. They expect far too much for such little pay! They head office is just a joke! Not worth the stress they put you under!"

Customer Service Assistant (Former Employee) says

"Bad management that don't know the job but think they do. Less hours and more work, with cut back of staff managers didn't pick up the slack as we were told."

Sales Assistant (Former Employee) says

"Rubbish company to work for, management are unapproachable and expect key handling for minimum wage. Housekeeping atrocious, blocked fire escapes with boxes, overall worst place I’ve ever worked."

Sales Assistant (Former Employee) says

"Bad experience working for whsmith. I wouldn't recommend working for whsmith. The company does nothing to support staff members, if any staff is intimidated by another staff member.."

Post Office Counter Clerk (Former Employee) says

"Rota all over the place. Inflexible regarding out of your control lateness. No real hands-on training offered. Failed probation on aspects of job not even shown or explained to me. Appeal Meeting totally ignored all my explanations. POOM has sticky fingers. And is only one with access to CCTV - no HR, area manager, head office remote access! Shocking company. Stay away!"

CSA (Customer Service Associate) says

"Management are to bad in this company, they treated there employees like beast, all though its poor, salary structure are also not good like any other location of whsmith store,if we need leave for any emergency, they didn't give us, and say that left ur job."

Customer Assistant (Former Employee) says

"not a happy fast aced environment. salary is terrible, I would recommend anyone to work there, theyre very strict about punctuality they acceot young students and young adults"
